"I gave my house back to the bank."
Did the bank accept your property back? Did you sign a "Deed" in front of a notary public, and did the bank record the deed in the official records of the county in which you live? If this did not happen, and if the bank did not have a sheriff or process server personally deliver official documents to you that your home was officially foreclosed, then you remain the owner of that property.

What's Your Home Worth?

Let me quickly and accurately assess your home's current value.

"So what does it mean if I still own the property?"
It means you have a vacant house in your name that has become one of the "zombie foreclosures". You are the legal owner. If the grass is 2 feet high in the springtime, the city compliance officer (a law enforcement officer) starts looking for you and tells you you have until X date to get it cleaned up and the grass mowed or the city will do it and make you pay. Compliance officers tell me, as Realtor for the various owners of these homes, that they won't just make a lien against the property; that the owner is personally responsible and they intend to pursue the matter. It also means sometimes that water bills accumulate against the property and become a lien. One client of mine who left her home in Portland was sent a bill some 2 years later for about $1,800!!
